Kerry County, Ireland

Posted in Personal

Last month my mom and I traveled to western Ireland and spent two wonderful weeks hiking the Dingle Way and the Kerry Way.  We hiked over 200 kilometers (roughly 120 miles) in ten days through rain, sun, clouds, mud, green grass, sheep shit, sand, roads, backyards, hills, valleys, forests, and towns.  We loved every minute of it, but were really glad to have our waterproof boots.  We booked our self guided hiking tours through Hillwalk Ireland who arranged all of our tours, bed and breakfasts, and luggage transport.  They also sent us very detailed instructions for our hikes as well as maps and a waterproof case.  Our trails were well marked but we cherished those maps.  All of our B&B owners were amazing and each went above and beyond, spoiling us in different ways.  Two that really stand out though are An Speice B&B in Ballyferriter where Alice had tea and scones waiting for us when we finished our hike and walked in the door, and Robeen House B&B in Killarney where we had the best breakfast and laughed with Bernice for an hour before checking out.  Our friend Jennifer joined us for our second hike, Kerry Way, and we made lots of friends along the way, including the Amys (from Portland and Anchorage), who we shared a few fun dinners with.  I will let the photos explain the rest of our travels.  If you’d like to see more photos let me know, 300 was just a little too many to put on the blog.
